The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Based on:Mockingjay by Suzzane Collins
What it’s about: Hugely popular, the Hunger Games trilogy, is set in a dystopian world that forces kids to participate in a televised annual death match. The young adult novels are packed with symbolism and a scathing view of our power-hungry world. A befitting conclusion to the popular Hunger Games trilogy, this action-packed finale has already garnered interest by protagonist Katniss Everdeen’s, played by Jennifer Lawrence, all-out revolt against the Capitol with its first part that came out last year. This November release also marks the final appearance of Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Moore, Liam Hemsworth
The Martian
Based on:The Martian by Andy Weir
What it’s about: The book sees mankind’s dream of setting foot on the Red planet coming true, but things are not so great for astronaut Mark Watney who gets caught in a dust storm there and is left behind by his crew. If you liked Gravity, you’ll certainly like this tale of survival and human spirit in the face of danger and isolation. This upcoming October release is being directed by Ridley Scott.
Starring: Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor
The Danish Girl
Based on:The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff
What it’s about: The film is based on David Ebershoff's novel, published in 2000, that recounts the lives of famed Danish artist Einar Wegner and his wife Gerda. The couple’s marriage turned on its head when Einar came out as a transgender in 1920. Gerda sparked his transition to Lili Elbe by asking him to wear female clothing for her painting, earning him the title of being the world’s first transgender woman. The film releases in November.
Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard
Maze Runner: Scorch Trails

Based on:Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
What it’s about: Another young adult series based in a dystopian world, Maze Runner, was a surprise hit last year. This second part in the series continues from where the first ended, with the action and dangers getting bigger. Directed by Wes Ball, the second instalment has Thomas and his fellow Gladers battling the powerful organization W.C.K.D while facing the perils of the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with dangerous obstacles. The film releases in September this year.
Starring: Dylan O’Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Thomas Sangster, Kaya Scodelario
Everest

Based on: Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
What it’s about: If you liked Vertical Limit, this one is sure to leave you stunned. Based on a non-fiction account penned by mountaineer Jon Krakauer, it recounts the catastrophic storm that struck Mount Everest on May 10/11, 1996 which killed at least eight people and left others shaken with the experience of being caught in a blizzard. It was considered one of the deadliest expeditions of the highest peak, until last year’s avalanche that saw multiple casualties. The film releases in September.
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, John Hawkes, Sam Worthington
Victor Frankenstein
Based on:Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
What it’s about: This book has been adapted so many times that you might wonder if there’s anything new for the directors to explore. That should not be a concern as this latest adaptation comes with a twist. Rewritten by Max Landis, director Paul McGuigan’s Victor Frankenstein focuses on hunchbacked Igor, Viktor Von Frankenstein’s assistant who did not feature in the original Shelley novel. What more? Igor will be played by none other than Daniel ‘Harry Potter’ Radcliffe in this film that will be released in November.
Starring: James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe, Andrew Scott
In The Heart of the Sea

Based on: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick
What it’s about: If you’ve read Herman Melville’s 1851 classic Moby Dick, you’ll certainly like this true story on which the classic was based. The tragedy occurred in 1820 when the Whaleship Essex was sunk by a sperm whale, leaving its 20 crew members drifting in three tiny whaleboats for over 90 days. Directed by Ron Howard, the film releases in December.
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Wishaw
