Camila Mendes is spicing up our Valentine's week with the debut of her latest rom-com 'Upgraded', co-starring
Archie Renaux. Known for her roles in popular series like 'Riverdale' and 'Do Revenge', Mendes is not only gracing the screen but also taking on the role of producer for this film, that also stars Lena Olin and
Marisa Tomei. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Mendes opened up about her inspirations, and potential future endeavours, including the possibility of exploring the superhero genre, much like her Hollywood peers.
The actress, who has been belting out some of the cutest teen romance dramas over the years, has unanimously been crowned as 'Gen-Z's Rom-Com Queen'.
When asked about her thoughts on this new title, to which she graciously responded, "I'm honoured, that's very kind!" When probed about some of her childhood icons she said, "My favourite rom-com queens are
Kate Hudson and
Jennifer Aniston."
Transitioning to her diverse portfolio, we delved into her roles in popular TV shows and her recent venture into production. "What do you look for in your movies, and do you hope to push your production ventures onto the big screen as well?" we inquired. Camila eagerly shared, "Yes, I do, that's always going to be a goal of mine. As for what I look for in movies—I definitely try to look for something that's grounded and that feels relatable. I'm really interested in intimate character-driven stories, so that's definitely something I gravitate towards."
Fans have been abuzz over Camila's chemistry with her co-star Archie Renaux and have declared this on-screen pairing between the 'Riverdale' and 'Shadow and Bone' stars as their least-expected crossover. Curious to know more, we asked her to share her experience of working with him. With a smile, Camila gushed, "I love Archie. He's just the best energy—very kind, a great scene partner, and just really easy to work with."
With the current trend of breakout web series stars bagging superhero roles, much like
Sydney Sweeney's casting in 'Madame Web' and
Milly Alcock's new role as 'Supergirl', we asked Camila if she plans to venture into the superhero genre. Camila's response was candid yet open-minded: "I'm always open. I think it would be a really fun challenge and experience to be in a superhero movie. Everything is case-by-case for me, so I just evaluate as I go."
The Prime Video film 'Upgraded', directed by
Carlson Young, sees Mendes play the character of Ana, an ambitious intern manoeuvring through the competitive art world when she has a serendipitous encounter with her own 'Prince Charming' in a first-class lounge. Audiences can catch the film streaming on Friday, February 9th.
