Until their last days, the late actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa maintained a strong and passionate bond. A collection of handwritten notes discovered at their house revealed their intense love and devotion, providing a touching window into their relationship.

Love in handwritten notes

According to a report by E! News, Santa Fe authorities released some of these personal notes. One particularly moving message showed Hackman expressing gratitude to Betsy for helping prepare her own birthday dinner, despite her role as his caregiver during his struggle with advanced Alzheimer’s. He ended the note with a simple, heartfelt sign-off: "Love you and the guys, G."

Humor amid illness

The notes revealed the traditional and genuine way the couple communicated their feelings. In one note, Hackman fondly referred to Betsy as a "lovely girl," while another simply stated that he was thinking of her, reflecting how she was always on his mind. Even while battling serious health issues, Hackman retained his characteristic humor. In one playful message, he wrote, "Ho, Ho, I am off to see the Wizard, the Wizz of Achie, Pokie. She stabs me here and stabs me there, she stabs me almost everywhere (almost). But I survive because after I am still alive. (But sometimes just barely)."
They were in love with each other. Additionally, Betsy updated Gene on her daily activities and tasks in handwritten notes. The last voicemail that was left at their residence, according to authorities, was on February 26th, just before the public learned of their deaths.

Final days

The notes' precise dates are unknown, but it was revealed that in her last days, Betsy had been looking up information online about COVID-19 symptoms like nosebleeds and dizziness—symptoms that Gene was reportedly showing, and perhaps Betsy as well. On the morning of February 12th, she made her last internet search for a Santa Fe healthcare provider.
Unfortunately, Betsy died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome later that day. A few days later, on February 17th and 18th, Gene Hackman passed away from heart disease and complications brought on by advanced Alzheimer's. In a private ceremony attended by close friends and family, the couple was buried together this month, signifying their unbreakable bond.
