Actor Maggie Wheeler, who played the memorable role of Janice on the hit sitcom Friends, recently shared a heartfelt moment she believes was a sign from her late co-star Matthew Perry. Perry, who passed away in October 2023, was best known for portraying Chandler Bing on the iconic show.
During an appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast with host Steve Kmetko, Wheeler reflected on the grief she felt after Perry's sudden death. She said that she experienced something very special that she believed might have been a message from him.
Matthew Perry, aged 54 at the time, was found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2023. His death was later ruled an accidental drowning, with reports revealing the presence of ketamine in his system. In the months that followed, five people were arrested in connection with his death. Three of them have already pleaded guilty to related charges.
Wheeler, who has also experienced personal loss in her life, mentioned that her own brother had died from a drug overdose. She explained that she was alone in a friend’s pool one day, thinking about both her brother and Perry. In that quiet moment, she noticed something unusual and touching—two hawks flew over her head. One of them circled back and appeared to guide the other before they both flew away. She said the moment felt beautiful and meaningful, especially because many people believe that birds can appear as signs from those who have passed away.
She shared that she had asked the spirit of Matthew Perry to "look out" for her brother, and soon after, the hawks appeared. To her, it felt like a comforting message.
The actress said that if someone believes in spiritual signs, this experience could easily be seen as one. She found comfort in the moment and said it stood out deeply during a time of mourning.
Following Perry’s passing, his family established the Matthew Perry Foundation, which aims to help people dealing with addiction—a cause the actor cared about deeply. The foundation is inspired by Perry’s own life and the struggles he publicly shared. On the one-year anniversary of his death, his family recalled how he had the ability to brighten a room and bring smiles to everyone around him.
His sister, Caitlin Morrison, described him as someone who had a magnetic presence, saying people always wanted to hear what he had to say. His loved ones hope that the foundation will continue to reflect the light he brought into the world and help others who are struggling, just as Perry had once hoped to do.
