Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey has generated excitement with the release of its first official image. The picture features Matt Damon in the lead role of Odysseus, the Greek hero known for his long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Damon is seen from behind, dressed in a warrior’s robe, seemingly fresh from battle. The film, produced by Universal Pictures, is an adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic poem, The Odyssey, which follows Odysseus’ decade-long struggle to return home to Ithaca after the war. His journey is filled with obstacles, encounters with mythical creatures, and interference from the gods. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope and their son Telemachus must deal with suitors vying for the throne in his absence.
Nolan has assembled a star-studded cast for the film. Alongside Damon, the ensemble includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, and Jon Bernthal. Supporting roles will be played by Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.
Though Nolan has not shared many plot details, The Hollywood Reporter speculated that Mia Goth might be playing a siren—a mythical creature known for luring sailors to their doom with her enchanting voice. In Homer’s story, Odysseus famously ties himself to a ship’s mast to resist their call. There is also speculation that Goth could portray a goddess or even a statue, but Universal has not provided any official confirmation on her role.
Considered one of the greatest works of Western literature, The Odyssey explores themes of heroism, perseverance, intelligence, and loyalty. Odysseus faces numerous trials, including an encounter with the one-eyed giant Cyclops Polyphemus, before his long-awaited reunion with Penelope.
As reported by ANI, The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. With Nolan at the helm and a stellar cast, the film is expected to bring Homer’s classic tale to life in a visually stunning and emotionally gripping way.
