Robin Williams led a very colourful but turbulent life. He starred in some memorable comedy films and rose to become one of the most loved actors of his generation worldwide.
However, tragedy suddenly struck when he was found dead on August 11, 2014 and the world suddenly learnt that his tragic suicide was a result of the chronic depression that he had been facing in his personal life.
Till then, all the world knew of him was through his comedic and happy roles in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Patch Adams, Moscow on the Hudson, the World’s Greatest Dad and other comedy films.
Sam Neill, the Jurassic Park star who has also acted in The Piano, was good friends with Robin Williams after the two worked together in Bicentennial Man in 1999. He recalls that Robin Williams was a very complex man who had everything that traditionally makes people happy, but yet he seemed to be very lonely – almost as if he was living on a lonely planet all by himself.
"He had fame, he was rich, people loved him, great kids—the world was his oyster. And yet I felt more sorry for him than I can express. He was the loneliest man on a lonely planet," reveals Neill, expressing that he recalls Williams appearing "inconsolably solitary and deeply depressed."
