Even though the uber-cool St Xavier’s college had a BMM festival of its own going on at the same time, that certainly didn’t stop the students of this college from turning up in huge numbers for the Bombay Times Fresh Face 2010 contest, powered by itimes.com. They turned up, registered on itimes.com and took their seats, anxiously chatting about the smorgasbord of talent that lay ahead of them.
And when the lovely co-judge Shenaz Treasuryvala entered the hall, cheers resounded! Shenaz incidentally is an ex-Xavierite and so this event had a special, sentimental importance for her as well.
Her attitude and demeanour instantly captured the hearts of the students gathered for the show. As the show commenced, it was obvious that all the contestants were very talented at what they did. The afro-haired Clince Varghese clearly has a bright future in emcee-ing, as he was really funny and witty with his talk. The pretty and talented Bhavana Bhatia did an amazing dance to an upbeat number, the smile on her face betrayed absolutely no nervousness even though later on, she did mention that she was a tad nervous and excited at the same time!
Madonna, who didn't claim to sing like her famous namesake, took over the job of emcee for a little while, before breaking into an energetic version of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’. She sure had a great personality. Girl in the green top Garima Sharma upped temperatures with a sizzling dance performance that boasted some great moves. Davina D’Souza also tackled a difficult number in song rather well as did the melodic Heloise. Vijay Kumar willingly removed his tee shirt and did a catwalk, but brawn aside it was the quieter, more talented Raahil Rai in a black tee and Udayan Phillip (who interestingly could juggle, and who was a half-Punjabi and half South-Indian) who emerged at the forefront. Raahil did a stirring rendition of a Goo Goo Dolls number and then segued into a Beatles tune, getting the audience to clap along. Udayan’s attitude and talent was unmistakeable. Among the girls, Susan Vaidyan sang a song that quite honestly would have given Mariah Carey a complex.
Quiet and unassuming, she was hands-down the best songstress there. Vasundhara Sharma had a lovely talent for photography and painting, something unique that day. Quite honestly, it was very, very hard to pick winners and runners-up from this lot and as Shenaz and the Bombay Times judge felt, all the finalists should have been runners-up, but the task had to be done! Raahil and Susan were declared the winners of this contest while Udayan and Vasundhara were the runners-up. Yes indeed, the Bombay Times Fresh Face 2010 contest powered by itimes.com had definitely put some excitement into their day!
