Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, father of well-known filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, passed away on 14 March 2025 at the age of 83 due to age-related health problems. His funeral was held at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai, where family, friends, and colleagues gathered to say their final goodbyes.

A prayer meet will be held in honour of Deb Mukherjee on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Filmalaya Studio, Ceasar Road, Amboli, Andheri West, Mumbai.
Deb Mukherjee began his acting journey in the 1960s, starring in films like 'Sambandh' and 'Abhinetri'. He later acted in movies such as 'Ek Baar Muskura Do' and 'Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool', earning praise for his performances. Over the years, he appeared in different types of roles, including in films like 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar' and 'Kaminey'.
Deb Mukherjee was married twice. From his first marriage, he had a daughter, Sunita, who is married to filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, known for directing films like 'Lagaan' and 'Jodhaa Akbar'. His son, Ayan Mukerji, was born from his second marriage to Amrit Mukherjee. Ayan has directed hit films such as 'Wake Up Sid', 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', and 'Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva'.
Deb Mukherjee was an important part of the Mukherjee family's famous Durga Puja celebrations. He was often seen at these gatherings with his nieces Kajol and Rani Mukerji, showing his strong connection to family traditions. Kajol, who shared a close bond with her uncle, posted an emotional message on social media after his passing. She wrote, "Grief is the price we pay for having loved deeply. It never goes away. We just learn to live with it."
Many Bollywood stars visited the Mukherjee home to offer their condolences. Actors like Ajay Devgn and Kiara Advani came to pay their respects. Ranbir Kapoor, a close friend of Ayan Mukerji, left his Alibaug trip early to be with the family. He also carried Deb Mukherjee’s body on his shoulders as part of the final rites, showing his deep bond with the family.
