Lisa Ray: Delhi has areas I don’t feel comfortable walking in

Lisa Ray was recently in the capital and when we caught up with her at an event, she spoke to us about her time in the city, and also about the ‘macho culture’ here.
She said, “I’ve spent a lot of time in Delhi and there are a lot of things I like about it. I’ve had nothing but good experiences and I have a lot of go-to places here. I’ve taken walks in Lodi Garden and have some special places and restaurants that I love visiting.” Speaking about Delhi’s cultural scene, she added, “I like the cultural scene here.The art scene is incredible. I actually go to a lot of new art galleries that open up,” she said.

The actress also spoke about the men in Delhi. She said, “I know it’s a very ‘macho culture’ here. Some of the guys here really try to put you off. I feel sorry for them. They’re obviously not true to themselves and comfortable in their own skin. I don’t endorse this culture at all and I think it has to be controlled in Delhi. But hopefully we’ll see some changes. There is definitely a fresh energy. A few years ago, I was shooting for a film at a hotel in Delhi and I used to wake up at 5am, board a rickshaw and go to a yoga centre. I didn’t over-think it and I never had any problem. But now there are huge problems in Delhi which I keep hearing about. I’m probably just one step away from actually experiencing any of that. There are areas where I don’t feel comfortable walking on the streets. I wouldn’t want to walk there on my own. As opposed to struggling with the reality, sometimes the wise thing to do is take precautions, understand what you’re dealing with and keep yourself safe,” she said.
