In 1947, a play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and it was also made into a movie that starred
Marlon Brando and
Vivien Leigh. You can now get set to watch the magic of the famous ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, based on Williams’ famous work.
The renowned drama that will be staged on June 2, 3, 15, 16 and 17, follows troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois as she leaves
Pondicherry and moves in with her sister, Stella Fernandez, and her husband Stanley, in Bombay.
Blanche's flirtatious presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship, leading to even greater conflict in the Fernandez household. It’s interesting to see the characters play out and what ensues is two hours of serious, high-intensity drama.
Says assistant director Subrahmanian Namboodiri, “What’s striking, is that the play was written so long ago, but it is still so relevant even today. A lot of the sarcasm and points in the characterisation used stick so well, regardless of the time frame and place they are written in, and that is what struck me the most. It’s about Bombay that had just begin to get migrants in. There were so many changes around and you can see these influences in the play. You really resonate with the characters, they are so relatable.”
The play will be staged at at Jeff Goldberg Studio, Khar. Members of the cast include Kashyap Shangari, Saloni Khanna, Urvazi Kotwal, Sumit Jakhar, Rishabhraj Mehrotra and Arjun Abrol.
