Bengaluru-based violinist Ambi Subramaniam was in Spain recently to shoot for a documentary and is elated to be a part of this project. Speaking to us about his experience, Ambi says, “The documentary, titled Trance, features Spanish flautist Jorge Pardo and is about his contribution to Flamenco music. The idea behind the documentary is to look at how Jorge has taken Flamenco music to different parts of the world.

The makers focused on his recent trip to India and that’s how I happened to be a part of the documentary, as I had collaborated with him during his visit to the country.”
The three-part documentary, directed by Emilio Belmonte, concludes with a concert featuring various musicians from around the world who have worked with Jorge, including Ambi. “I was very excited to be a part of this, as I got to meet and interact with so many musicians from around the world, like Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda, percussionist Tino di Geraldo, Niño Josele and several Flamenco dancers and singers. The documentary has turned out beautifully, because it captures the contribution of flamenco music from all over the world,” he says. Trance, says Ambi, also helped him understand the nuances of other forms of music. “I met a lot of artistes and was blown away with the way they performed. They are so diverse and meeting them helped me understand their music and their way of performing as well,” says Ambi, adding that the documentary is scheduled to release next year at several film festivals around the world.
