Playback singer Prakriti Kakar was in town recently. We caught up with the glamorous singer, who is all set to make her Kannada singing debut soon with a song from
Yaana.
Your thoughts on your Kannada debut?I am thrilled, because as I have patiently waited for my South Indian debut to happen. My Bollywood debut happened four years ago, and since then I have been singing songs in Hindi as well as regional songs and jingles.
Recently, I also sang for a campaign, featuring Mahesh Babu. But, when it comes to movies, this film song would mark my debut.
How difficult was it to sing in a different language? I have heard
Joshua Sridhar sir’s hit songs earlier, and was excited about it from Day 1. He and his team came to Mumbai to record the song. Of course, I needed a language supervisor, because I don’t know Kannada. But that always happens even when I am dubbing for an advertisement. I must admit, singing this song was pretty difficult, because I needed to master the pronunciation of a few words. In fact, the biggest issue was in cracking the first word of the song. I was doing it right for most part of it. I, somehow, managed to sing it correctly, and thank Joshua sir for being patient with me and explaining the song to me properly.
How has the song turned out?I loved the melody of the song. I think the song is super youthful and romantic. It is about first love and infatuation.
What’s your take on the evolution of playback singing, as well as onstage performances? Times are changing, and a lot of singers are more than just a voice for actors. We all have a to play a certain character behind the mike and it’s a challenge. There’s a lot to learn. And, now with social media taking over, the audience wants to know more about us — how their favourite singers look like? And what they are doing? So, yes the role has also changed.
Who are your favourite composers? For every singer, the list of people they want to work with is never-ending. Similarly, my list is endless and I don’t have a few names. I admire Arijit Singh, and would love to work with him again, as well as Vishal and Shekhar, AR Rahman and many more. I would want to work with Joshua sir again in the near future.
