Just like in Bollywood, in Ollywood too, ‘replacing’ actors is a common trend Only a few weeks ago,
Kareena Kapoor Khan was replaced by
Deepika Padukone in
Ram Leela. Few months before that, Kareena had replaced
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in
Heroine.
But if you thought this cycle of actors and actresses replacing their fellow stars in films was a phenomenon restricted to Bollywood, you couldn’t have been farther from the truth.
Closer home, in Ollywood, this “changing” cycle has been rather constant. In fact, in the just-released film,
Parshuram,
Samaresh Routray was replaced by Siddhant Mohapatra for the villain’s role.
The reasons for replacing an actor seldom vary with “date issues” being the main culprit. In the 2009 film,
Mita Re Mita, the lead role was initially offered to Budhaditya, but because of “date problems” the film then went to Arindam.
Says Budhaditya, “Yes, I was offered the lead role in
Mita Re Mita, but I was busy with T
uThile Mo Dara Kahakuat that time. So, I had to let it pass.” Ironically, Budhaditya’s role in
Tu Thile Mo Dara Kahaku was offered to Anubhav Mohanty.
Not just actors, actresses in Ollywood are also frequently replaced by filmmakers. Koyel Banerjee Mishra replaced Riya Dey in
Om Sai Ram (2012). But how much does the chemistry between a filmmaker and a star influence the final “role call”?
Says director Chakradhar Sahu, “Good filmmakers never change their original choice for actors. Putting favouritism before professionalism can’t be accepted.”
Sometimes, actors are also unceremoniously dumped from films. For the 2011 film,
Family No. 1 Sambit Acharya was replaced by Deepak, and this after Sambit was seen participating at the mahurat of the movie. Sambit, however, quickly dismisses it as rejection and says, “I couldn’t do the movie because of date problems.”
Similarly, Buddhaditya was replaced by Sabyasachi in the 2009 film,
Tu Mori Pain, after he had shot some portions of the film, then known as
Love Story. Well, this trend in filmdom surely seems difficult to replace!
