Transgender community upset with Thiagarajan Kumararaja

It looks like the transgender community is quite upset with the way they have been portrayed in Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s latest outing, Super Deluxe. Vijay Sethupathi played a transgender called Shilpa in the film and fetched accolades for his performance. Now, popular transgender personality Priya Babu has lashed out at the film’s director Thiagarajan Kumararaja and Vijay Sethupathi.
Her post read, “Vijay Sethupathi cannot become a transgender merely by wearing a sari.What matters is what you are trying to say through the character. Dear Thiagarajan Kumararaja, please know about us and understand us before making films on us. A transgender is someone who treats other women like her sister, But, in Super Deluxe, you have portrayed Vijay Sethupathi as someone with wife and kids. Thiagarajan Kumararaja has made us scapegoats to win applause for the film. Just when this society started respecting our community, his ill-conceived portrayal has ruined everything.”
Sharing her opinion on a male actor playing a transgender, Priya added, “Why does Tamil cinema always ask men to play a transgender? We are not men. We are transgenders. Today, transgenders are getting respectable jobs and in the film, Vijay Sethupathi is seen becoming happy for receiving just Rs 20 from a person. Who told you that transgenders marry, give birth to a child and then understand their gender? Thiagarajan Kumaraja has demeaned transgenders in the film.” She called the depiction of transgenders a cruel one. Many other transgenders have also taken objection to the portrayal of Vijay Sethupathi as transgender in the film.
