Akhir Chandigarh hai kiska?

Akhir Chandigarh hai kiska?
Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar recently opened a long standing debate on Chandigarh belonging to Haryana, and not Punjab. He referred to Punjab as Haryana's "elder brother" and suggested that the problems prevailing in Haryana will be resolved if Chandigarh becomes its capital. "If in 1966, we had decided on two different capitals then we wouldn't have to argue on this now.

Punjab is developing New Chandigarh, so if they make it their new capital and let us take Chandigarh, then this problem will be solved itself," said Khattar during a TOI event in city recently.

We open the debate yet again and bring it out from some leading people who call Chandigarh their home.

I think Chandigarh should go to Punjab since it was built from capital taken from Punjab. But, there is a caveat. Politicians would disturb its character to appease vote banks. But bureaucrats, who have three year tenures, and hence no stake in the city, would be better off handling its administration. The best analogy describing this situation is of a child who is raised by his parents, but when he grows up he wants to abandon those parents. However, Haryana should be equally compensated to build their own capital.

I think this city belongs to the people who live here and they want status quo. Chandigarh has got its own character and temperament, and actually belongs to three states. There are bigger issues to delve in- from farmers, development, education, water etc. The argument whether Chandigarh should become either state's capital should be closed forever.

Chandigarh is a part of both Haryana and Punjab. It should remain like that because that ways it can concentrate on both states, and residents of both states can benefit from the UT. It's better Punjab and Haryana stop this sibling rivalry now which has been going on since years, since the time of Partition, and be in the game together to prosper together.

I am not much aware about the politician's reasons, and whether it benefits them if Chandigarh remains as a single state's capital or UT, but I feel so far this city is the best among all the other cities. The various civic systems, taxes- which are cheaper here despite GST, petrol rates, property taxes, electricity, water and vehicle registrations, are all better off than others. Then why change that status when remaining a UT it has maintained its grace.
