Summer travel just got easier: DGCA approves more flights for summer; check routes and more
India's aviation sector is poised for significant growth this summer, with airlines increasing their flight operations to meet rising passenger demand. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved a 5.5% increase in weekly flights for the summer schedule, which spans from March 30 to October 25, 2025.

Expansion of flight operations

According to the DGCA, Indian carriers will operate 25,610 weekly flights to and from 129 airports during this period, up from 24,275 weekly departures in the previous year. This expansion includes the introduction of seven new airports: Ambikapur, Datia, Bidar, Porbandar, Pakyong, Rewa, and Solapur. However, operations from Azamgarh and Rupsi airports have been suspended for this summer schedule.

Airlines leading the surge

With the most weekly domestic flight schedule of any airline at 14,158, IndiGo is poised to dominate India's summer skies. Following closely behind, Air India Express has 3,375 departures planned while Air India is preparing 4,310 flights. Airlines are making every effort to improve connection and guarantee more smooth travel around the nation due to the surge in demand for travel. One thing is certain as the rivalry intensifies: Indian tourists have more summer travel options than ever before!

Meanwhile, SpiceJet has announced the launch of 24 new domestic flights, expanding its network to include three new destinations: Tuticorin, Porbandar, and Dehradun. Starting from March 30, 2025, the airline will connect Tuticorin to Chennai and Bengaluru, offering daily and twice-daily flights, respectively. Dehradun will also be directly accessible from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. Porbandar will be connected to Mumbai with a non-stop flight operating twice a week. Additionally, new flights between Ahmedabad and Srinagar, as well as Pune and Varanasi, will be introduced. Routes connecting Bengaluru with Goa and Pune with Chennai will also resume.
India’s aviation scene is getting a major shake-up—there may be fewer airlines in the game, but they’re stepping up their frequency to keep up with surging demand. This trend is expected to smash records in the upcoming summer schedule, ensuring travelers have more options to jet off. But it’s not all smooth flying—supply chain hiccups continue to put the brakes on expansion, keeping airlines on their toes. Despite the challenges, the industry is proving that fewer carriers don’t mean fewer choices—just busier runways and packed flight schedules.
