The Phoenix Suns have been under the spotlight recently, primarily because of their star player,
Kevin Durant. During a first-quarter timeout in the Suns’ recent
119-117 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, TNT cameras caught a tense moment between Durant and head coach Mike Budenholzer. As the coach attempted to communicate with his star player, he reached for Durant’s arm. Durant visibly pulled away, walked past Budenholzer, then turned back and shouted something in frustration. The moment quickly spread across social media, fueling speculation about a growing disconnect within the team.
Is there any tension between Kevin Durant and Mike Budenholzer?
Sideline reporter Stephanie Ready later explained that the disagreement stemmed from a "miscommunication" on an offensive play. Soon, there was a huge speculation about a potential friction between the duo.
After the game,
Kevin Durant did not shy away from addressing the viral moment, pushing back against narratives suggesting a fractured relationship with
Mike Budenholzer.
“That’s what usually happens when you don’t know the dynamics of a relationship. You catch something on TV, you get a quote, and now you’re pushing that narrative as if me and Bud don’t do s**t all the time,” Durant said. “We are competitive as two individuals who want to see things done the right way. And sometimes my way ain’t the way that Bud wants to do it and vice-versa. He allows me as a player on the team, a veteran on the team, to voice my opinion. If we both didn’t care, we would never have stuff like that.”

Durant further called out the media for amplifying the moment while ignoring the positive exchanges between him and Budenholzer throughout the game. “I wish they’d slow-mo when me and him are trying to come to a solution together, smiling on the bench and tapping each other on the chest,” he added.
Aside from the off-court noise, Durant delivered a masterclass performance, leading the Suns with 34 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. More impressively, he scored 19 of his points in the fourth quarter, helping Phoenix erase a 23-point deficit.
Budenholzer, who has been under scrutiny in his first season with Phoenix, praised Durant’s leadership after the game. “He and I, we’re like old friends or whatever, we’re just probably grabbin’ and talkin’ to each other…. Really, from that moment, his voice and him talking, feedback, ideas, suggestions were really a big part of the night.”
The Suns’ victory was a much-needed boost, but their path to the postseason remains uncertain. With a 29-33 record, they sit 11th in the Western Conference, three games behind the Dallas Mavericks for the final play-in spot. Durant, however, is focused on the moment rather than the bigger picture.
