Wayne Gretzky makes a joke about head coach Jon Cooper
Prior to Team Canada's match against the United States in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game on February 20, hockey icon Wayne Gretzky spoke to the team in the locker room. In addition to reading the starting lineup, he also paused to offer some words of encouragement and humor to the players.
Wayne Gretzky started off by congratulating the team for making it to the final, acknowledging the dedication and effort they put in. He spoke of how proud they had made the hockey fraternity, as well as retired players who used to don the Canadian jersey. Referring to the pride of representing Canada at the international level, he reminded them of how great it felt to wear the maple leaf and represent their country. His visit and message were both inspiration and motivation prior to the championship game.
"First of all, congratulations. You made the hockey world proud, ex-players, and of course the country, so good for you guys. It's been fun to watch," Gretzky said. "I know you give up a lot of time to do these kinds of things, but nothing is more fun than playing for the country. So I wish you guys good luck tonight.”
Wayne Gretzky then made a joke about head coach Jon Cooper. “Coop had me flown in to do the starting lineup. He didn’t pay me any money, but...” Gretzky said before announcing the starters. Before naming Jordan Binnington as the starting goalie, Wayne Gretzky made a humorous moment with the team, bursting out laughing as he made the announcement. The players all cheered and laughed.
But Wayne Gretzky also drew criticism from Canadian fans at the 4 Nations tournament. As an honorary captain of the team, he declined to wear the Canadian jersey and was photographed giving a thumbs-up to American players. Numerous fans protested this, particularly in light of recent tensions concerning U.S. President Donald Trump's trade wars and comments labelling Canada the "51st state." His behavior was seen by some to be disrespectful during a period of increased national sensitivity.
Wayne Gretzky's historical political affiliations and connection with erstwhile U.S. President Donald Trump have triggered annoyance among Canadian supporters, leading to a petition to take his name off an Edmonton highway. Notwithstanding the controversy, he participated in celebrating Canada's dramatic 3-2 overtime victory, giving the team customized hats with the caption "Be Great.
