Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Canadians for criticising Wayne Gretzky
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Canadians to cut Wayne Gretzky some slack after the hockey legend received intense criticism for his outspoken backing of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Gretzky was present at Trump's inauguration in January and has made repeated trips to Mar-a-Lago in Florida since then.
The backlash got worse after Gretzky was spotted at Trump's election party last fall, even donning a "Make America Great Again" cap. While weighing in on Ontario's reaction to American tariffs on Canadian products, Ford took time out to defend Gretzky as a proud Canadian who loves his country dearly. Ford also said he had spoken with Gretzky, who was emotional and "choked up" over the scandal.
Janet Gretzky also defended her husband after receiving "mean" comments on his support for Trump broke his heart. Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and 10% on energy, sparking a trade war with Canada. Trump's tariff threats have sparked patriotism in Canada, with fans booing the U.S. national anthem at sporting events, following Gretzky's role as Team Canada's honorary captain at the Four Nations Face-Off in February.
"He is a patriot, he loves Canada," Ford said Tuesday at a news conference where he announced a series of retaliatory measures against the U.S. "He never gave up his Canadian passport. So folks, give the guy a break, just give him a break. He loves Canada. He loves it like no tomorrow.”
