The New England Patriots made a major roster move on Friday, releasing veteran linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley after seven seasons with the team. A three-time captain and a key voice in the locker room, Bentley was a staple of New England’s defense and a leader on and off the field. His release signals a shift in philosophy under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel, who is looking to implement a more aggressive defensive scheme. Bentley, who missed most of last season with a torn left pectoral muscle, had recently been cleared for a full return. The move comes after the Patriots made significant financial commitments to other linebackers, raising questions about Bentley’s future before the final decision was made.
Why the New England Patriots released Ja’Whaun Bentley after seven seasons
Ja’Whaun Bentley, 28, had been a reliable force in the Patriots' defense since being drafted in the fifth round out of Purdue in 2018. Bentley made his mark early as the first three-time captain in Purdue history, and that leadership carried over into the NFL. In New England, he became a key voice in the locker room and a steady force in Belichick and Mayo’s defensive system. He racked up more than 100 tackles in three straight seasons (2021-2023), peaking at 122 in 2022. But when he tore his pectoral muscle just two games into the 2024 season, his future with the team suddenly felt uncertain.
The Patriots’ recent moves only added to that uncertainty. They brought in former Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane on a three-year, $33 million deal, a clear sign they were shaking up the linebacker corps. Then, New England matched Las Vegas’ two-year offer sheet for restricted free agent Christian Elliss, worth up to $13.5 million, further crowding the linebacker room. Bentley was set to earn $4.35 million this season, with additional per-game roster bonuses and workout incentives. While he had expressed optimism about his return, the writing was on the wall.
Bentley acknowledged his departure with a farewell message on X, thanking the Patriots organization and the fans. His departure marks the end of an era for a player who thrived in the old-school, downhill style of defense that defined the Belichick era. Now, as Vrabel looks to reshape the Patriots’ identity, New England is moving forward without one of its most respected veterans.
