Cooper Kupp’s NFL journey has taken an unexpected turn as the star wide receiver prepares to start a new chapter with the Seattle Seahawks. After spending eight seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Kupp was recently released—a move that left him with more questions than answers. Now back in his home state of Washington, Kupp is eager to make a fresh start with the Seahawks, having signed a three-year, $45 million contract.

Cooper Kupp says Rams never clarified offseason split as he starts new chapter with Seahawks

Kupp, a native of Yakima, Washington, expressed his confusion over the Rams' decision to part ways with him. During his introductory press conference with the Seahawks on Tuesday, Kupp admitted that he never received full clarity on why the Rams chose to release him.
'It's been difficult': Kupp reacts to leaving Rams after 8 years

"I'm sure they have their reasons for why they want to do things. Whatever it is," Kupp said. "Not a ton of clarity in that regard, but at the end of the day, I'm thankful to be able to walk away from that organization and be able to look back at all those memories, all those experiences, all those things we were able to go through together ... and look at it in a positive light, and be very thankful for my time in Los Angeles."
Drafted in the third round in 2017, Kupp became one of the most dominant receivers in the league during his time with the Rams. His 2021 season was historic—he caught 145 passes for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns, winning the receiving triple crown and leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory, where he was named MVP. However, injuries have plagued him since that remarkable year, limiting him to just 12 or fewer games in each of the last three seasons.
The Rams' decision to move on from Kupp became clear in February when they informed him of their intent to explore trade options. However, when no trade materialized, Kupp was officially released last week. The Rams subsequently signed Davante Adams to strengthen their offense alongside Puka Nacua.
"It's been difficult. In all honesty, it's been very difficult and frustrating," Kupp said about the situation. "There's been lots of questions. ... I've always imagined that I'd finish my career there, but that's not what the plan was that God had for me and my family. Stepping into this new adventure, this new place, this new chapter in my career but also in our lives. ... Without a doubt, it has been difficult. We're human; we're real people."
Despite the difficult departure, Kupp is embracing the opportunity to play for his hometown team. The Seahawks are in a transition phase, having traded DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers and released Tyler Lockett. Kupp will join a revamped receiving corps featuring rising star Jaxon Smith-Njigba and new quarterback Sam Darnold.
Kupp remains confident in his ability to perform at an elite level. "I still see myself playing this game at a very high level. I see myself as an ascending player. Any narrative that is any different, I think, is just someone that hasn't watched a whole lot of film," Kupp said.
In Seattle, Kupp will continue to wear his familiar No. 10 jersey after striking a deal with Uchenna Nwosu, who previously held the number. Kupp arranged to donate to Nwosu's foundation in exchange for the jersey—a move that reflects his commitment to both his new team and the community.
