“This team was a breath of fresh air for me,” Berube said. “To come in and see how hard they work and how hard they compete every day, and just their preparation was, in my opinion, first class.
What he inherited after Sheldon Keefe's contract expired is an early exit from the playoffs in Toronto. He has proven that experience, including having won a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, is a telling factor in remaking the performance of the Leafs this season. This was reflected in a recent 5-4 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins, with scant minutes left to bring the score level by Pontus Holmberg and Mitch Marner achieving the exhilarating overtime-winning third goal of the night at 4:04 in overtime.
“Big goal there 6-on-5 by Holmberg, and we didn’t quit," Marner said via NHL.com. "That’s what we like to see out of our team." That win moved the Leafs up to 74 points in their 58 games played in the Eastern Conference.
