Monte Carlo Masters: Novak Djokovic stunned by Alejandro Tabilo in second round

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock early exit from the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, falling to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, hampered by an eye infection since the Miami Open semi-finals, looked off pace throughout the match.
The loss extends Djokovic’s title drought, with his last triumph coming at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Tabilo, ranked 32nd in the world, dominated the sluggish Serb and now boasts a 2-0 record against him on clay, having also defeated him at the Rome Masters last year.

Djokovic, chasing his 100th ATP title, admitted prior to the tournament that his expectations were modest due to ongoing physical discomfort. His subdued performance confirmed those concerns, as Tabilo faced little resistance in sealing a straight-sets victory. The Chilean now moves into the last 16, where he awaits the winner of Grigor Dimitrov vs. Valentin Vacherot.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz rebounded from a poor first set to overpower Francisco Cerundolo 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, registering his first win at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard, after a shaky American swing, rediscovered his rhythm on clay and set up a last-16 clash with Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.
In an emotional farewell, French veteran Richard Gasquet was knocked out in his final Monte Carlo appearance by Altmaier, capping a storied career that spanned over two decades.
