Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket launch: Timing and flight details
Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket is scheduled for launch at 9:30 a.m. ET (6:30 a.m. PT) from the company's Launch Site One in West Texas. The mission, designated NS-31, features an all-female crew of six, including pop star Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and pilot and journalist Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.
The flight is expected to last approximately 11 minutes, reaching an altitude of about 62 miles above Earth, crossing the Kármán Line—the internationally recognized boundary of space. During this brief journey, the crew will experience weightlessness before returning to Earth via parachute-assisted landing in the West Texas desert.
Blue Origin has made the launch accessible to viewers worldwide by providing a livestream on both YouTube and the company's official website. This initiative underscores Blue Origin's commitment to expanding space tourism and inspiring future generations through accessible space exploration.
Custom suits designed for the all-women Blue Origin crew
The flight suits worn by Blue Origin’s all-women crew are made from flame-resistant stretch neoprene and custom-tailored to each member using 3D body scans for an exact fit. Sanchez teamed up with Monse designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim in late 2024 to create suits that combine safety with style.
“Usually, these suits are made for a man,” Sánchez told The New York Times, pointing out that previous versions were simply adjusted to fit women. The new suits include thoughtful details like calf zippers and flared legs—designed to be both practical and flattering.
