Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur behind xAI, is actively seeking talented backend engineers to bolster the development and reliability of his AI chatbot, Grok. The company's recruitment efforts, highlighted through social media posts and a job posting, underscore the platform’s aim to build robust and scalable AI to better compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
A recent post, shared by Igor Babuschkin, co-founder and an engineer at xAI, called for “outstanding backend engineers to help keep Grok performant and reliable.”
Musk himself amplified the call, emphasizing xAI's unique approach to AI development, stating, "xAI is the only major AI company with an absolute focus on truth, whether politically correct or not."
He further elaborated, "Rigorous adherence to truth is the only way to build safe AI and the only way to understand the true nature of the Universe."
What is the job profile and annual salary for working at xAI
The backend engineer role at xAI involves maintaining the performance, reliability and scalability of the company's production services, enabling product and research teams to deploy innovative AI products and models.
Responsibilities include designing, writing, and maintaining high-performance Rust microservices, collaborating with product and research teams, troubleshooting complex backend issues and contributing to the evolution of xAI’s infrastructure.
Ideal candidates possess a strong foundation in computer science principles, proficiency in Python, Rust, Kubernetes and Scala, experience in maintaining production services, and knowledge of networking concepts.
The interview process consists of a CV and statement review, a 15-minute initial phone interview, and four subsequent technical interviews covering coding assessment, systems hands-on, project deep-dive, and a team meet-and-greet. The annual salary range for the position is $180,000 - $440,000 USD.

Earlier this year, Musk extended a global call for software engineering talent to contribute to his ambitious “everything app” project. In a direct appeal posted on X, formerly Twitter, Musk urged "hardcore software engineers" to submit their best work to
