Vijayveer Sidhu, a 21-year-old Indian shooter, secured the 17th Paris Games quota place for India by winning a silver medal in the men's 25m rapid-fire event at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta. He joins his compatriot Anish Bhanwala, who had previously earned a Paris berth with a bronze medal at the Asian Championship in Changwon, Korea, last year. Vijayveer qualified for the final in fourth place with a score of 577, earning the quota without relying on the medal. Vijayveer and his brother were introduced to shooting at their school's gun range and have been passionate about the sport ever since.
Their parents moved to Chandigarh to provide better facilities for their sons, who were excelling in the junior circuit. However, shortly after the move, Vijayveer's father, Gurpreet Singh Sidhu, passed away due to a sudden illness. Despite this significant loss, the siblings continued their dream run in shooting, thanks to the support of their mother, Rani Kaur, a government school teacher. Vijayveer's achievements include numerous medals at various international competitions, such as the ISSF Junior World Cup, World Championships, World Cup, ISSF Junior Cup, and Asian Championships. He has won gold, silver, and bronze medals in events like the 25m Standard Pistol, 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, and 10m Air Pistol, both individually and as part of a team. As one of India's most promising young shooters, Vijayveer has already established himself as a strong contender to represent the country at the Olympics. Winning an Olympic medal would further cement his position among the world's elite shooters.
