Eijaz Khan: I still feel the industry hasn’t fully tapped into my potential

Eijaz Khan, who has been balancing TV, web, and films for many years, says he is in a good place professionally. Although he’s currently on a break from television, he clarifies he hasn’t left the medium but is focused on exploring diverse characters on other platforms.

While TV actors often express difficulties in switching to films and OTT, Eijaz Khan has successfully made the transition. Most recently seen in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan, Eijaz admits that the shift has become easier over time. He explains, “The industry is more receptive to casting television actors now. Of course, you still need a ‘cooling-off’ period because no one wants an actor with TV baggage. However, back in the early 2000s, it was nearly impossible for TV actors to break into films. At that time, things didn’t work out for me. Later, I re-entered Bollywood after some successful TV shows. Today, I am happy to be a part of films and web shows.”
He adds, “While I no longer feel the need to prove myself, validation from the audience is still crucial in this industry. I crave recognition more than applause.”
Eijaz has faced both personal and professional challenges, including a particularly tough patch last year when he suffered a series of injuries. He shares, “Last year was rough. I contracted typhoid twice, fractured four metatarsals in my right foot, and had to get rods inserted. I was bedridden for two months and spent another three in physiotherapy. Then, I ruptured my left Achilles tendon during a football match, which also required surgery.”
Despite the setbacks, Eijaz has made a strong return with several projects, including the web series Adrishyam – The Invisible Heroes. He believes he’s in a great phase of his career right now. “I can always go back to television if I want and with good roles. But for now, I’m staying away from daily soaps because it’s a long-term commitment. I’m getting to explore diverse characters in OTT and films. I still feel the industry hasn’t fully tapped into my potential, so I make sure to give more during auditions, hoping they’ll notice something unique and add more layers to the role,” he says.

‘I keep away from negativity’
Ask him about his personal life, and Eijaz, who has dealt with his share of public breakups, replies, “Love isn’t for me, and the rumours never seem to die down. I still hear stories about me having an attitude, but anyone who’s worked with me knows my dedication. That’s why I keep away from negativity. Right now, my only focus is on work...I can’t afford to slow down.”
