Even though he made his television debut in 2015 with Rettai Vaal Kuruvi, it was the second season of Cooku With Comali that made
Ashwin Kumar Lakshmikanthan a household name here. No wonder, then, this breakout star, who has found a massive fan following, is our Chennai Times Most Desirable Man On Television 2020. Ashwin says that with this win, he feels he’s finally arrived.
In an interview, Ashwin talks about his journey, experience on the show, and more...
Cooku With Comali gave my life back to me: Ashwin
You’ve been chosen as the Chennai Times Most Desirable Man On Television 2020. How does that feel?I was on television six years ago, but my name hadn’t appeared anywhere. I went on to do several commercials and shorts as well. But I have seldom got an opportunity to talk about it. And now, I am on top of this list. Honestly, this announcement is something I wait for every year; I’ve dreamt of seeing my name somewhere in the top 20. But when I learnt that I had clinched the number one slot, I couldn’t believe it. I honestly thought someone was pulling a prank on me! I’m happy and excited beyond words. All this was possible because of my fans and their unconditional love.
So, what makes you desirable?I think desirability has got a lot to do with one’s personality. I always work towards being a good human. For the amount of troubles I went through to reach this stage, this win means a lot. But I was also aware of how I should conduct myself. Stars like Sivakarthikeyan have inspired me. As a human, you tend to lose your calm at some point. But I ensured I was being myself through the journey. I feel people liked my honesty and casualness.
Is that why you feel you have a huge female fan base?I’m not quite sure. I usually see them commenting ‘cute’ or ‘handsome’ for my performances or scenes from the show. Maybe they think I am cute... therillanga (laughs). But it’s heart-warming to see such love.
Your journey of seven-odd years in the industry must have been interesting...I was always been encouraged to get into the field of acting when I was in college and I even attended an audition once. But my parents weren’t supportive of that decision back then. Since I was dependent on them, I wanted to wait it out. After a while, Vijay Stars auditions were happening in different parts of the state. I took part in it and even reached the finals. Later, I did a look test for Saravanan Meenatchi, but the team felt I looked too young. Then, Pradeep Milroy sir roped me in for Rettai Vaal Kuruvi that launched me as a lead actor. Around this time, I also started doing small roles in films. So, I started using Dubsmash and worked on my acting skills as well. But things didn’t pan out the way I’d expected. I was branded a loser, but I waited patiently for the right opportunity to come by. My friend, too, helped me a great deal during this period. I did ad films, shorts, music videos to earn money. The short films did really well and I was finally getting recognised. I was offerened two popular film remakes, but they were only supporting characters. It was during this time that Cooku With Comali happened.
Did you ever expect this kind of love for the show? No. I went to the show as a loser, but magic happened. Back then, I used to get generic comments on social media, but now, the love that I get is overwhelming. Fans are a huge part of a star’s life and the perfect example is STR sir. It took seven years for me to reach this stage, and I am glad that I waited patiently. Cooku With Comali gave my life back to me. I loved being part of the show and must thank a lot of people, like Shakeela ma’am, who was like my mother, Sivaangi, who helped me come out of my comfort zone, and Kani for encouraging me.
And now, you are making your debut as a hero...Yes. When people around me were signing films, I would wonder why nothing good came my way. See, I wasn’t desperate to do films, but I was desperate to do good films. Then, producer Ravindran sir offered me a good script. I hope to be part of such nice films.
How are you staying positive during such grim times? It can be depressing to watch the news, but don’t panic when you assimilate that information. Keep yourself positive by doing things you love. I spend my time watching movies, listening to music, comedy clippings, cooking and playing on my PlayStation. Do something for society in whatever capacity you can and follow all safety precautions. Don’t be complacent, and get vaccinated soon. I recently recovered from COVID-19, and I will get vaccinated after 45 days or so.
Quick TakesWhat turns you on and off in a woman? Her eyes. I will know for sure if they’re being genuine or fake. I love women who are bold and independent. But lack of understanding is something that turns me off.
Who, according to you, are the most desirable man and woman in the industry?Ajith sir and Shalini ma’am. I love Ajith sir as a person and Shalini ma’am is a fantastic performer. They are a cute couple!
