Oscars 2022: The Academy reacts on Will Smith- Chris Rock slap drama: 'We do not condone violence'

Hollywood actor Will Smith has landed into a controversy at the 94th Oscars 2022 awards ceremony. He slapped Chris Rock in the middle of the event after he joked about Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald look. Minutes later post this slap gate incident, Will Smith won the Best Actor award for his performance in the film 'King Richard'. Now, speculations are rife that the 'Men In Black' actor might have to return his award as The Academy has a strict code of conduct policy. The Academy has now broken the silence over the unfortunate incident and stated that they do not 'condone violence.' Taking to the official Twitter handle, The Academy tweeted, 'The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.' This tweet has now left fans confused on whether Smith will be asked to return his honour due to his conduct during the ceremony. Post this tweet, several netizens took to the comment section to give their reactions. While one user tweeted, 'What's happening? First, you watch a guy hit someone on the face, clearly assaulting on a live TV. Letting that slide like it was a regular job then proceeds to announce him the winner. And then you have the audacity to say: The Academy does not condone violence. What's wrong?', another one said, 'Don't take away his Oscar. Just make it a show focused on the awards again. Put in all the awards you took out and add some more technical awards for good measure.' Notably, in the middle of the event, Will Smith went up on stage at the Oscars 2022 live event and punched Chris Rock in the face after he made fun of his wife's bald look. He even screamed 'Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.' However, Will Smith apologized for his behaviour then and there only as he said, 'I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment, and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me, it’s about being able to shine a light on all the people..the entire cast and crew of King Richard.' Chris also reportedly approached the Smiths family after the incident and apologised to them. For more news & updates, stay tuned to ETimes.
