Police informed The Associated Press that they were responding to the scene near Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak Market but had no immediate details on the number of workers present at the site during the collapse.
The midday earthquake was followed by a powerful 6.4-magnitude aftershock, prompting officials to advise people in Bangkok who had evacuated their buildings to remain outside in case of further tremors.
“All of a sudden the whole building began to move, immediately there was screaming and a lot of panic,” Fraser Morton, a tourist from Scotland, told Associated Press. He was in one of Bangkok's many malls shopping for camera equipment.
“I just started walking calmly at first but then the building started really moving, yeah, a lot of screaming, a lot of panic, people running the wrong way down the escalators, lots of banging and crashing inside the mall.”
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced on Friday that she had cut short an official visit to Phuket to hold an "urgent meeting" in response to the earthquake, according to a post on X.
Tremors were also felt in China's southwest Yunnan province, where Beijing's quake agency reported the magnitude at 7.9, says AFP.
Myanmar, where the quake originated, is prone to seismic activity. According to the USGS, six strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher struck the country between 1930 and 1956, primarily along the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through central Myanmar.
