Anti-Trump groups, including those involved in the massive "Hands Off" protest, have planned another day of resistance. The 50501 group, which stands for "50 protests in 50 states, 1 movement," is planning simultaneous demonstrations across all 50 states on April 19. The group hopes to rally a crowd similar in size to the April 5 "Hands Off" protest, which was also seen in cities outside the US, including London, Berlin, and Paris.
The 50501 group is calling for 11 million people to participate in the protest, which represents 3.5% of the US population. They believe that reaching this number will mark the point at which "ongoing resistance becomes necessary to create an impact."
Why are these groups protesting against Trump
Protest groups argue that
Donald Trump’s actions have alienated many Americans. They point to steps such as reducing the federal workforce, closing social security offices, passing laws recognising only two genders, sending back immigrants, pressuring allied nations, cutting funds for health and education programs, and dismantling government agencies. These groups claim that Trump is making a direct assault on democracy in the United States. The 50501 group has stated that the April 19 demonstration will be a protest against what they view as a "hostile government takeover" by the Trump administration.
What is the 50501 Movement
The 50501 Movement is an organisation that was formed in early 2025 in response to policies implemented by Trump during his second term. The name, "50501," represents "50 protests, 50 states, one day." The movement was born from a desire to take action against what the group describes as the "antidemocratic and illegal actions" of the Trump administration.
Earlier protests against Trump administration
On April 5, the 50501 group organized the largest protest since Trump began his second term, with nearly 600,000 people signing up to participate. In addition to the 50501 group, civil rights organizations, veterans' groups, women’s rights groups, labour unions, and LGBTQ+ advocates also joined the protest. The grassroots group has previously organised protests against Trump on February 4, as well as a "No Kings Day" protest on February 17 and another demonstration on March 4.
Protestors' main demands
- An end to the "Trump takeover" and the rampant corruption within the Trump administration.
- An end to cuts in federal funding for Medical aid, Social Security, and other programs that working people rely on.
- An end to attacks on immigrants, transgender individuals, and other marginalized communities.
What's next
The 50501 group and its allies are mobilizing for the April 19 demonstration. Organisers expect it to be one of the largest demonstrations against the Trump administration to date.
