CHANDIGARH: UT director general of police (DGP) Surendra Singh Yadav, a 1997 batch IPS officer, was transferred on Tuesday. He was appointed as deputy inspector general (DIG) in Border Security Force (BSF) on a deputation basis with immediate effect.
After IG Kiran Bedi, DGP Surendra Yadav's tenure was the shortest for any UT police chief in the city. DGP Yadav spent just one year and 14 days as UT police DGP. Kiran Bedi was transferred from the city after 44 days.

In its order, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) said 2004 batch IPS R K Singh, IG, Chandigarh, will look after the charge of UT DGP till further orders. The MHA also directed the UT chief secretary to relieve Surendra Singh Yadav immediately to take up his new assignment.
Yadav joined as the DGP Chandigarh on March 16, 2024. After taking charge, Yadav transferred 2,763 cops from the rank of constables to sub-inspectors on July 23, 2024, which surprised everyone in the department. In another unprecedented move, Yadav took an initiative of inviting constables to join him for breakfast at his official residence in Sector 5.
The motive behind the move was to listen to the challenges faced by the constables while carrying out their duties in the city. Additionally, he wanted to take their input on ways to enhance the effectiveness of policing in Chandigarh. DGP Yadav also initiated meetings with the public to foster better police-public cooperation.
The police department was also seen as tough on its cops in terms of corruption. Several cops were suspended, dismissed, and transferred to police lines for their alleged involvement in graft cases or misconduct this year. During his tenure, the department also demoted inspector Harinder Singh Shekhon, who was posted in the security wing, to sub-inspector.
In January 2025, the ministry of personnel, grievances, and pensions created a new post of additional director general of police in the city. Previously, the sanctioned top post in the Chandigarh police was inspector general of police (IGP) in the city. However, the last IGP was R P Upadhyay, and after that, three IPS officials of the rank of DGP were posted in Chandigarh.
