The Formula 1 pre-season test in Bahrain is over, providing good indications of the competitive order before the season unfolds in 2025. Testing lap times never necessarily point to the actual pecking order, but the three-day test session painted an important picture of team performances. McLaren was the clear star performer, while Sauber was the one struggling.

McLaren shines with race simulations

McLaren showed incredible speed during testing, cementing its position as a leading contender. Lando Norris gave a staggering race simulation on Day 2, 30 seconds clear of Ferrari and Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc and Andrea Kimi Antonelli on identical programs.
Oscar Piastri continued to impress on Day 3, maintaining an edge over George Russell even when conditions worsened. The group, though, is being prudent. Both Piastri and Norris have stressed the importance of better rear grip, especially considering the specific requirements of the Bahrain International Circuit.

Williams is promising, yet Red Bull is still a wildcard

Although Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon put up competitive lap times, Williams' pace over the long run indicates they are still behind the leaders. However, their hope for a fifth-place Constructors' Championship finish would be a big improvement.
While Red Bull is still an unknown factor, Max Verstappen failed to run a full race simulation, which raised question marks about the team's real pace. But with their history, they can still be a surprise package at the opening round in Melbourne.

Sauber struggles through Audi transition

As Sauber gears up to be transformed into Audi next season, the team seems to be more interested in the future than the present. Their poor showing in Bahrain shows that they may be in for a tough season, with Nico Hülkenberg's poor showing additionally piling pressure on the Audi camp.

Mercedes searching for answers

Of the established heavyweights, Mercedes recorded the weakest performances for the longest stretches of the final day of testing. Still, in the aggregate lap number, Mercedes topped at 458 laps with Haas and Racing Bulls following.

The team has yet to regain its previously dominant status since the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where huge controversy has erupted. If Mercedes wants to beat McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari, a massive overhaul will have to take place before 2026.

Aston Martin takes a tough test

Aston Martin faced a dismal test, with Lance Stroll failing to take the final session because he was feeling unwell. The AMR25 had limited running, with Fernando Alonso doing most of the mileage. The team will have a tough debrief when they evaluate their limited running.

As the 2025 F1 season prepares for its first race on March 16 in Australia, the fight at the front appears to be a close struggle between McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari. Sauber and Mercedes, however, will have their work cut out if they are to restore their fortunes.
