Tyler Callihan, the rookie for Cincinnati Reds, suffered a nasty injury only four games into his short major league career. On Monday night versus the Atlanta Braves, Callihan crashed into the wall in center field while chasing a deep fly ball and broke his left forearm. The Reds dropped 4–0, but the score felt inconsequential in the wake of the frightening scene. Tyler Callihan had just gotten to the team and was exhibiting good effort. Now, he faces surgery and a long recovery process ahead.

Reds’ Tyler Callihan’s all-out effort ends in pain

The incident occurred in the third inning of the game on Monday at Truist Park in Atlanta. Braves player Matt Olson flew a ball into deep left, and Tyler Callihan took off for it. It seemed he was going to make the catch and then ran headlong into the wall. After he hit the ground, the ball flew from his glove. Tyler Callihan had grasped his left arm with no hesitation at all and appeared to be injured seriously.
Worse still, the play became an inside-the-park home run as the ball rolled away. Reds players attempted to assist Tyler Callihan, but it was apparent he couldn't keep going. He removed his glove while on the ground and had to be escorted off the field.
The Reds appealed the home run, expecting it to be declared a ground-rule double or catch, but the decision was not overturned. That brought the score to 4–0 for the Braves, and the Reds were not able to bounce back.

After the game, Reds manager Terry Francona had the bad news: Tyler Callihan had broken several bones in his left forearm and would have surgery. "There's no good way to explain it," Francona said. "The kid is running full blast, trying everything he can to save runs."
Francona also reported that center fielder TJ Friedl was the first to arrive at Tyler Callihan. "TJ said it was so bad when he got there that they knew. So we’ll get him fixed up. He’s young. He’ll be OK. It’s gonna take a little while.," the manager stated.

Tough luck for rising prospect Tyler Callihan

Tyler Callihan is only 24 and has just come up from making his MLB debut. The Reds drafted him in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He was respected for his hustle and good work ethic, Tyler Callihan had been grinding to find his place on the roster.
Before the injury, he had only played three games at the major-league level. His fourth outing came Monday night. He had made an impression on coaches with his work and enthusiasm in the field.
His major league experience is now in limbo. He'll return to Cincinnati on Tuesday and have surgery shortly after. It's too early to say how long he'll be out, but fractures to the forearm can take months to mend completely.
After Tyler Callihan was removed from the game, Blake Dunn took his place in left field. The Reds weren't very fortunate for the rest of the evening. The Braves almost had a no-hitter and gave the Reds their third consecutive loss.
The record for Cincinnati dropped to 18–18 with the loss. They have three remaining games in Atlanta this week, but the priority for now is Tyler Callihan's health.
