John Tavares, the former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently opened up about the idea of becoming a coach someday. While many see him as a natural leader, Tavares admitted he hasn’t really considered coaching yet. His main focus is still on playing hockey and spending time with his young family.

John Tavares says coaching hasn’t really crossed his mind

Now in his 16th NHL season and nearing the end of his $77 million contract, John Tavares continues to be a major contributor to the team. Even though he’s no longer captain—having passed the role to Auston Matthews—he still plays a big leadership role in the locker room. Teammates and coaches often describe him as someone who’s like a coach on the ice thanks to his hockey IQ and professionalism.

After Friday’s practice, Tavares said coaching hasn’t really crossed his mind. Right now, he’s just focused on playing the game and enjoying his time on the ice. "Definitely never thought about that," Tavares said. "I want to keep playing. So, you know, I got some — you guys have seen my two young boys, so it'd be, whatever happens, it'd be, certainly be a lot of fun to be around them and be a part of that, if they continue on playing or whatever, wherever it takes them."
Tavares has 36 goals and 70 points this season, including a key goal against the Panthers that helped secure a playoff spot. With 9 goals and 5 assists in his last 8 games, he’s in strong form. He enjoys mentoring teammates but plans to keep playing for now. Coaching might be an option down the road.
“I'd like to just obviously think that I've gained a good amount of experience and knowledge playing in the league, about myself," Tavares added. "So just try to help, whether it's my teammates, the group as a whole, or feedback with, you know, Craig or the coaching staff. But you know, my experience, obviously, I figured a few times that you can contribute in that area."
