Gandhinagar: On the eve of World Heritage Day (April 18), the state govt announced that four Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) sites in Gujarat — Ahmedabad, Champaner, Rani Ki Vav, and Dholavira — attracted 12.88 lakh tourists in 2024.
An official statement on Thursday stated that over 7.15 lakh tourists visited the Heritage City of Ahmedabad, more than 3.64 lakh visited Rani Ki Vav in Patan, over 1.6 lakh visited Dholavira, and more than 47,000 visited Champaner. The statement added that 36.95 lakh domestic and international tourists visited the 18 different heritage sites of the state in 2024.
Champaner-Pavagadh, located in the Panchmahal district, is an ancient historical city. It was designated as Gujarat's first World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2004. Rani Ki Vav received the World Heritage Site tag in 2014. Ahmedabad's walled city area became India's first World Heritage City in 2017. Dholavira, a village located in the Khadir Beyt of Bhachau taluka in Kutch district, was declared a World Heritage Site in 2021. Locals refer to it as ‘Kotdo' or ‘Kotda Timbo'. An ancient metropolis of the Harappan civilisation was discovered near Dholavira.
