Christ University honours alumni MPs & MLAs
Bengaluru: There were ministers, MLAs, and MPs. But when they walked into Christ University Saturday, there was no power to wield or stature to show off. They had all turned to those old Christites who reminisced about the good old days when they used to run to classes for attendance, forget ID cards, and find ways to bunk programmes.
It was an alumni visit with a twist as the university honoured eight of its alumni who are currently MPs and MLAs. The event, organised by the offices of Alumni Foundation and Alumni Engagement, was held at the main auditorium of the Central Campus.
It was a moment of nostalgia as all of them reminisced about their college days, from writing impositions to running to classes to make it in time for attendance, much like the current generation.
Sagar Eshwar Khandre, MP from Bidar, spoke about his days of forgetting ID cards and learning tricks that students pulled to sleep during programmes and still get attendance.
While Shilpi Neha Tirkey, minister of agriculture in Jharkhand, expressed gratitude for Christ University's role in shaping her life, advocate Chandy Oommen, MLA from Kerala, shared how the faculty ensured he was given no special privileges despite his status as the then Kerala chief minister's son. He spoke of his days at Christ boys' hostel, the impositions he had to write, and the times he got his phone confiscated by faculty members, just like any other student.
Krishna Byre Gowda, minister for revenue in Karnataka, reminisced about the impact Christ University had on his life, saying: "We need our universities to produce thought leaders."
Sudha Murty, MP and former faculty member, shared how her love and passion for teaching at Christ University enriched her life and left her with cherished memories.
Advocate Francis George, MP from Kerala, shared memories of his life in one of the institution's first batches, such as the days when he would get last-minute revision for final exams from his economics teacher. Mallesh Babu, MLA from Kolar, said the bonds of friendship formed during his college days supported him through hardships and helped him learn to survive the cut-throat world outside.
Advocate Darshan Dhruvanarayana, MLA, credited Christ University for the discipline that aided him in furthering his career.
