HC seeks report on Dallewal’s detention
Bathinda: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday issued a notice to the Punjab govt to file a reply and a status report on the detention of fasting farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal by March 24.
Hoshiarpur resident Gurmukh Singh filed a habeas corpus petition in the court seeking the release of Dallewal and terming his detention as illegal.
"The unlawful detention of Dallewal, who is seeking legal rights for MSP, violated the fundamental rights under Articles 21 and 22, as no formal arrest procedures or charges were followed," said the petition, The petitioner sought the court's intervention to ensure the safety and security of Dallewal and other missing leaders, with a request to direct the state govt to produce the detainee in court.
Dallewal and others were taken into custody when they were returning after holding a meeting with central and state ministers at Chandigarh on March 19.
Dallewal was initially taken to Patiala and then to the PWD Rest House in Jalandhar.
