Mohali: Police have arrested six of the 17 individuals named in the FIR filed after a violent altercation at the govt hospital in Derabassi recently. The arrested accused were produced before a local court on Sunday and remanded in three-day police custody, said Derabassi DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar.
The arrested accused have been identified as Anil Kumar alias Hani Pandit, Naresh Kumar, Manish Kumar Mangu, Mohit, Gurmeet Singh and Naib Singh. Others against whom a case was filed include Angrez Singh, Mahipal, Karampal, Ashok Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Raj Kumar, Amar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Gurjant, Miank, and Sanjeev Kumar.
The case was registered on the complaint of Ranjit Singh alias Minta, under multiple sections of BNS, following a brutal assault that took place within the hospital premises. The attack was said to be a fallout of a conflict over illegal mining activities in Mukandpur village.
The incident took political overtones with Congress leader and constituency in-charge Deepinder Singh Dhillon visiting the victims and releasing a video statement. Dhillon blamed the ruling AAP for the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.
He alleged that Minta Gujjar, who led the attack on Hani Pandit and his family, is a known gangster with 14 criminal cases registered against him, including those of extortion and attempted murder. "The government talks about eradicating gangster culture, yet their own MLA, Kuljit Singh Randhawa, inducted this criminal into the party days before panchayat elections," Dhillon said.
According to him, Minta was not only included in the party but was made sarpanch of the village. Tensions escalated when Congress supporters allegedly disrupted a kabaddi tournament which was being held in Mukandpur every year for a decade, despite directions from the high court.
The attack came in the wake of Hani Pandit submitting a complaint to the Mohali DC highlighting illegal mining in the region. In retaliation, Ranjit Singh and his associates allegedly attacked Pandit's family at their home and later followed them to hospital, where a second assault occurred.
