CHENNAI: Flyovers in T Nagar and R K Nagar, under construction for nearly two years, will be opened to the public by May, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
In T Nagar, GCC has resolved alignment issues near Ranganathan Street and has begun work to connect the new 1.2-km-long CIT Nagar flyover with the existing Usman Road flyover. North Usman Road is also being widened to ensure both flyovers match in width.
Originally scheduled for completion by Dec 2024, the two-lane steel flyover project was delayed as the new flyover, beyond Madley Junction, was found to be slightly higher than the level of the existing Usman Road flyover. To address this, officials from bridges department said CIT Nagar flyover will end before Ranganathan Street. Vehicles will travel about 100 metres along a dedicated closed-lane road at ground level before merging into the new structure.
"There will also be an exit near Ranganathan Street for shoppers heading towards Panagal Park. We are in the process of acquiring land nearby to develop a service lane," said a senior official.
Once completed, the T Nagar flyover will offer direct connectivity from Anna Salai at CIT Nagar to Panagal Park.
Municipal administration minister K N Nehru announced in the assembly that both T Nagar and R K Nagar flyovers will be opened by May.
"Only Vyasarpadi Ganeshapuram flyover is taking time due to ongoing work over railway tracks. This may take another three months. All other flyover works will be completed soon," he said.
Royapuram MLA R Murthy raised concerns over the prolonged delays of projects in North Chennai. The 96-crore project for a two-lane flyover in Korukkupet has been stuck due to delays by the Railways in girder placement, forcing commuters to take long detours.
However, officials said the girders have now arrived and will be placed shortly. "Simultaneously, we are black-topping the remaining portions of the flyover," said an official. The flyover, which spans Tondiarpet High Road, is expected to ease congestion towards Vyasarpadi and Kodungaiyur. Additionally, two new bridges crossing Cooum River in Nolambur are expected to be opened by July.
