Three tourists booked for assaulting cabbie at Calangute
Calangute: A taxi driver was allegedly assaulted by a group of tourists at Calangute on Wednesday. His car was also damaged in the incident at Naika Vaddo.
Calangute police said the incident occurred at around 4.30pm when a tourist with a woman pillion rider dashed his two-wheeler against the rear-view mirror of the tourist taxi and fell on the road. The group of tourists were on four two-wheelers. Enraged, they allegedly began assaulting the taxi driver with their helmets when he halted the car, prompting him to reportedly flee, leaving the vehicle with his passengers at the site of the accident. The tourists then allegedly smashed the windscreen and also damaged the rear-view mirrors. The taxi had picked up passengers from Mopa airport for a drop-off at a hotel at Calangute.
Following the incident, the taxi driver lodged a complaint at the Calangute police station. Three of the tourists — Manish Tomar, 40, Vijay Rajput, 47, and Dhruv Rajput, 21 — were booked. A large number of taxi drivers gathered at the police station on Wednesday night demanding strict action against the tourists. “Tourists come to Goa and think they can beat up the locals and go away. These type of incidents have been rising. There has to be strict action against these type of tourists,” taxi drivers said.
