Margao: A 70-year-old woman from Fatorda succumbed to severe burn injuries while undergoing treatment at the GMC on Saturday, following an accident at her residence.According to police reports, the incident occurred on March 6 when the deceased, identified as Smita Lotlikar, attempted to light a diya using a gas lighter at home. The lighter allegedly burst unexpectedly, setting her night dress ablaze and causing severe burn injuries. She was rushed to South Goa District Hospital, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was referred to the GMC.
Fatorda police, who are investigating the case, conducted a detailed inquiry. A post-mortem examination was conducted too, revealed the cause of death as “asphyxiation as a result of inhalational burns associated with neurogenic shock”. After completion of the formalities, the body was handed over to the family for final rites. The incident has been registered as an unnatural death.
