Dharwad: A Gandhi Bhavan constructed near New Central Bus Stand in Dharwad will finally be inaugurated on April 21 (Monday) at 10am.
Labour minister Santosh Lad will inaugurate the Bhavan. Union minister for food and public distribution, consumer affairs, new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi, chairman of legislative council Basavaraj Horatti and other elected representatives will be present.
Though the construction of Bhavan had been completed two years ago, it was not thrown open to the public. The Bhavan aims at portraying the journey of Gandhi from ‘Mohandas to Mahatma' and the India's freedom movement.
This building came up as part of the state govt's project of constructing Gandhi Bhavans in all the districts. The project was announced during the first tenure of Siddaramaiah as the chief minister (2013-2018) and Rs One crore was sanctioned.
The district administration proposed a 20 guntha plot near BRTS depot and the civil works started right away, only to be stalled following the change of guard in the state.
Repeated appeals by social activists and intellectuals in the city finally led to grants being sanctioned and the works restarted.
The ‘Gandhi Bhavan' tries to capture the journey of Gandhi through various exhibits and also provide information on the visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Dharwad district.
Not many people, particularly the younger generation, know that Mahatma Gandhi had visited Dharwad during the freedom movement and had held open sessions to motivate people to plunge into the freedom struggle.
He had extensively travelled in North Karnataka and had met several veteran freedom fighters from the undivided Dharwad district.
The Bhavan has rare pictures and letters written by Mahatma Gandhi to the British govt back then.
