KOTTAYAM: A 34-year-old woman allegedly pushed her two daughters, aged five and two, into the Meenachil river in Kottayam and then jumped into the waters herself thereafter on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said that the three were pulled out from the river but later died at a private hospital.
Police identified the deceased as Jismol Jose, 34, a lawyer and wife of Neerikkad native Jimmy, and her daughters Neha, 5, and Nora, 2.
According to police, locals saw the two children in the water in Kannampuzha. They flung into action immediately and fished out the two. Meanwhile, Jismol was found near the bank of the river in Arumanoor.
While the three were rushed to the private hospital in Thellakom, their lives could not be saved. It is suspected that Jismol cut a vein on her hand before jumping into the river while the children were made to drink some cleaning lotion. The details will be clear only after the autopsy, police said.
Locals came to know of the incident after Jismol's two-wheeler — which bore an advocate's emblem — was found. She was practising as a lawyer in the high court and Pala court. She was the vice president of Mutholy panchayat around 2019-20. Her husband, Jimmy, is an electrical engineer at a private hospital in Thellakom.
Ettumanur Police have launched a probe. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary of the medical college hospital and will be handed over to the relatives on Thursday.
