12 shops, 40 slums removed during anti-encroachment drive at KGMU
Lucknow: Amid substantial security presence, anti-encroachment campaign continued at King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Sunday. The operation, which entered its second day, resulted in the removal of approximately 12 shops and 40 slums.
The unauthorised structures were situated in the vicinity of a shrine, whilst the centuries-old shrine remained untouched. Atiq Ahmed, the caretaker of the shrine, confirmed that while the structures around it were demolished, the shrine remained untouched.
Lucknow Municipal Corporation teams were working to clear the debris. Around 60 police officers and 80 university security personnel were stationed at the site. The roads near Gate Number 1 and the ophthalmology department were closed to public access during the drive.
A violent clash took place on Saturday when shopkeepers attacked KGMU professors and resident doctors in front of the police. Two professors were injured in the incident. After the altercation, additional police and PAC forces were deployed.
Doctors clarified that notices were issued for the removal of these illegal shops over the past six months, but in vain. KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said the university administration had made it clear that no illegal occupation of its land will be tolerated.
