Mooney’s 96 propels Guj Giants to big win against UP Warriorz
Lucknow: Beth Mooney's unbeaten 96-run knock and superb spells by bowlers guided Gujarat Giants to a massive 81-run victory over UP Warriorz in a one-sided Women's Premier League (WPL) match at the Ekana stadium on Monday.
Mooney narrowly missed her unbeaten century by four runs while guiding Gujarat Giants to a formidable total of 186/5 in 20 overs.
Gujarat Giants bowlers bundled out UP Warriorz for mere 105 in 17.1 overs while they were chasing a massive 188 for a win. With this loss, UP Warriorz have slipped to the bottom of the five-team table.
This was GG's second victory over UP Warriorz this season.
Deandra Dottin, Kashvee Gautam and Meghna Singh's outstanding bowling performance brought UP Warriorz to their knees. It all started with Dottin taking the wickets of Kiran Navgire and Georgia Voll in her first over.
After Voll's departure, right-hand batter Dinesh Vrinda opened her account and attempted a scoop across, but the ball crashed into the stumps off Kashvee Gautam's delivery to make it 3/13 in 3.1 overs. Skipper Deepti Sharma (6) also went to the pavilion early. Shweta Sehrawat joined hands with Grace Harris (25) and contributed five runs before being dismissed by Gardner at 5/36. Chinelle Henry (28), Sophie Ecclestone (14), and Uma Chetry (17) added useful runs but in vain.
Earlier, UP Warriorz savoured an exhilarating moment early in the match when Chinelle Henry secured the crucial wicket of Dayalan Hemalatha in the inaugural over.
The Gujarat Giants appeared under considerable pressure, managing merely 40/1 during the power play. Post- powerplay, opener Beth Mooney and middle-order batter Harleen Deol accelerated the scoring rate, forging a robust partnership of 101 runs off 67 balls for the second wicket.
Harleen (45) fell short of her fifty by 5 runs when she attempted a cut shot but missed Ecclestone's delivery that struck the stumps.
Skipper Ashleigh Gardner (11) joined forces with Mooney, establishing a 44-run partnership. Deandra Dottin unleashed a brilliant towering six and amassed 17 runs off 8 deliveries, including two boundaries, before attempting a reverse sweep that resulted in her dismissal.
