Madurai: A 22-year-old man was arrested by Madurai district police on Friday for allegedly assaulting a government bus driver and damaging the vehicle's windscreen while under the influence of alcohol.
Police said the incident occurred early on Friday on the Thirumangalam–Tirunelveli four-lane highway, near the Kallikudi Taluk office. G Mahendran, 35, a government bus driver from Sivakasi, was operating a Neyveli-bound bus when the accused, identified as C Balamurugan of Pandian Nagar, Thirumangalam, stood in the middle of the road on his two-wheeler.
Following a quarrel, Balamurugan allegedly smashed the bus's front windscreen and broke the wiper. When Mahendran tried to intervene, he was attacked with the broken wiper and sustained injuries. Passengers rushed to the driver's aid, prompting the assailant to flee.
Kallikudi police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act. Balamurugan was later traced and arrested.
