19-year-old caught stealing bikes hours after release from prison
Nagpur: A 19-year-old two-wheeler thief proved that prison may be termed a correctional and rehabilitation centre, but it cannot reform all criminals. Within two hours of being released from prison, after spending one year there, Nishant Pali alias Honey again started stealing two-wheelers on April 5.
Police said Honey started stealing two-wheelers, especially Activa scooters, for fast money to sponsor his narco addictions. He had around 10 cases registered against him in the past. Another three were detected after his latest arrest on Tuesday morning.
In the two days before that, Honey had left cops of three police stations — Yashodhara Nagar, Pachpaoli, and Jaripatka — on their toes by repeatedly stealing two-wheelers. Though cops were able to spot him in CCTV cameras, Honey managed to elude the police for two days.
After being released from prison, Honey first stole an Activa from Jaripatka market and tried to sell it. After its fuel ran out, he abandoned it at another place. Honey then stole another Activa scooter from Yashodhara Nagar the following day. He abandoned the Activa scooter at a place in Adarsh Nagar, and stole yet another scooter parked in front of a house within the limits of Pachpaoli police station at 4am on Tuesday.
The Activa scooter stolen from Adarsh Nagar belonged to a student who called the control room shortly after noticing the theft of her scooter. The cops from Pachpaoli were alerted by the control room. A detection branch team of Pachpaoli, headed by head constable Laxman Shende, under senior inspector Baburao Raut, spotted Honey dragging the stolen Activa scooter of the student near Noga Company. He started moving away quickly, but cops intercepted him.
Apart from the stolen Activa scooter from Adarsh Nagar, the cops also recovered the ones stolen from Jaripatka and Yashodhara Nagar. "Honey had started stealing within two hours of his release from prison. He was caught within two hours of his last theft at Adarsh Nagar," said Senior PI Raut, adding Honey had been in jail over the charges he was facing after his earlier arrest for thefts elsewhere.
