Nagpur: Three flights were diverted to the Nagpur airport due to bad weather at their respective destinations on Monday. One of the planes, on its way from Delhi to Ahmedabad, which landed at Nagpur, was also low on fuel, said sources.
The other flights that got diverted here were on their way from Mumbai to Jaipur and Mumbai to Indore. The planes remained halted at Nagpur airport until close to midnight, waiting for a clearance from their destinations.
Nagpur lies on the routes of all three flights.
One of them was low on fuel. The reason could be that the flight was holding in the air, waiting for the weather to clear for a long time. However, the holding fuel of the aircraft may have run short, leading to a decision to land the plane at Nagpur, said sources.
In March, a plane made a go round instead of landing, after a dog was suspected to be standing on the runway. However, the plane later made an emergency landing at Bhopal instead. Low fuel was a reason. The pilot preferred to land at Bhopal instead of flying back to Nagpur and waiting for runway clearance, as it was low on holding fuel needed for hovering mid-air. The aircraft was refuelled at Bhopal.
The Nagpur airport has proven to be a convenient destination for emergency landings and diversions due to its location. It also lies on the route of international airlines, and a number of Bangladeshi planes have made emergency landings at Nagpur. In one of the cases, the pilot suffered a heart attack and later passed away at a private hospital in the city.
