RAIPUR: With anger raging in Durg over the rape, torture and murder of a six-year-old child, Chhattisgarh director general of police (DGP) Arun Dev Gautam visited the district on Wednesday to assess the ground situation and ordered a crackdown on drugs.
The horrific crime has shaken the community. Calling the incident "heart-wrenching and a shock to society", DGP Gautam told mediapersons that the investigation is being fast-tracked, and every effort is being made to bring justice to the victim's family.
"The case will be heard in a fast-track court, and the accused will face the harshest possible punishment at the earliest," he said.
The DGP's first stop was the police control room from where he moved to Bhilai Nagar police station for a spot inspection. He reviewed station records, inspected facilities, and interacted with officers and personnel.

IG Ramgopal Garg, SP Jitendra Shukla and other senior officers from Durg range accompanied him.
"The objective of this surprise inspection was to understand on-ground policing and identify how we can strengthen basic law enforcement mechanisms," ," said Gautam.
He emphasized that the core responsibility of police is to control crime and establish trust with public. Station staff were directed to improve community engagement and prioritize crime prevention.
DGP Gautam voiced serious concern over the rising trend of substance abuse among youngsters, even minors, in the state. He called it a major challenge for Chhattisgarh police, warning that it poses long-term threats to society.
"We are cracking down on drug dealers and traffickers across the state but community involvement is vital. Police can curb supply, but it's society and families that must stop the demand," he said, urging citizens to join de-addiction campaigns, and protect children from falling into the grip of drugs. According to the DGP, major operations targeting narcotics networks have taken place in the last six months, and more are on the way.
The savagery inflicted on the child has triggered a wave of public outrage, placing immense pressure on local law enforcement to deliver swift and exemplary justice.
DGP Gautam reaffirmed his commitment: "We are here to ensure justice. We are working relentlessly to bring the culprit to book and make sure no family ever suffers such horror again."
